Atelier for an Artist

2021

This project is about a young artist’s atelier in Athens. The dominant issue taken into account during the design process is the creation of a space perfectly coordinated and harmonized with the daily routine, the needs and the way of work of this specific artist. Thus, observing the ritual of the creative process that follows in each of his works, we tried to translate it into an architectural plan and finally to create the corresponding space.

The challenge of this project is to maintain a visually unified but semantically subdivided space, with the fewest interventions. In order to do so, ceiling design is considered as a composition tool. Filling the beams and lighting were our main design tools. In this way, four main sections and two auxiliary units were created. A. the entrance, B. the living room. C. the theater- exhibition, D. work, E. storage, F. WC and kitchen.

In both the entrance, living room, work and exhibition sections, industrial type furniture are used. Dexions were designed and placed on the background as in the foreground some vintage aesthetic furniture was selected to come in a harmonious contrast with the rest.

When the artist started to use his atelier, the need for further separation emerged. The team proposed a mobile panel which either unify or dissociate some parts of the house according to the use and the current scenario. This panel also facilitates him to exhibit his works on a daily basis, working nearby at the same time. His ultimate goal is to make each of his paintings part of a larger whole.
